Only 'unhealthy' in my area today apparently

The map says the west is very unhealthy while my side is just unhealthy, which is a weird thing to feel relieved about 😷. My eyes have been stinging since Monday so I'm not sure the numbers and the actual air are on speaking terms.

Source for the map numbers being anywhere near the actual air? My eyes are the only monitor I trust. AQI reading 446 got published and then everyone started arguing about whether it's comparable, that alone tells you the index is vibes with a colour code

Monitors two streets apart disagree, so that colour gradient means nothing

Bro monitors disagreeing is literally the point, air is patchy as hell street to street so the gradient showing your block as "merely" unhealthy while the west is a chimney is real info, not decoration.

Kabir Gupta7h

Nah, the gradient is literally the only useful part

Marcos Vidal4h

The gradient is the least useful part, it is literally a computer guessing colours for the empty space between two monitors that already disagree, so you are trusting a render, not the air.

Charlie Brown4h

So the fix is to bin the render and trust the vibe of your own eyeballs? Sick, let's scrap every monitoring network on earth and have people rate the smog out of ten based on how much their corneas hurt. Two monitors disagreeing is a calibration problem, not proof that drawing a line between two points is some kind of hoax, that's how literally every map of anything works. And your eyes stinging since Monday isn't the air out-voting the computer, it's just what particulates do to eyeballs. Ngl this whole "trust the air, not the screen" take sounds deep until you actually think about it for four seconds.

Fine, calibration is a real thing, but a smooth colour gradient stitched over two disagreeing sensors is still a render sold to you as ground truth, and I'll trust my burning eyes over your pretty pixels every time

Noah Tremblay1h

Your burning eyes can't tell you if it's 120 or 300, which is the literal only number that matters when you're deciding whether to go outside, so congrats on trusting the one instrument with no scale on it.

So the gradient is useful even though the monitors two streets apart cant agree on the same air, huh?
