Read that Japan is hosting a record number of foreigners and my first move was to check flight prices, which was a mistake. Hostels there will be gone before I ever save enough, and half the people crying about overtourism are the same ones posting their fifth Kyoto temple photo.

Tokyo being the whole point is exactly the lazy tourist mindset that keeps every hostel in the city booked out and prices stupid. The whole point of going somewhere is seeing the place, not queueing with a thousand other people for the same temple shot you already saw on five feeds. Half the country is cheaper and emptier and you'd rather pay triple to stand in Shibuya crossing like it's a ride at a theme park.

Half the country being cheaper is straight bs when the train ticket to reach those empty towns costs more than the three Tokyo hostel nights you're crying about, so staying put is the actual budget move, not the lazy one.

Half the country sits empty because there's nothing in those towns but a shuttered mall and one vending machine, thats not a hidden gem you found, thats just rural decay with better PR.

Booked a hostel in Kanazawa specifically to dodge the golden route crowds and the place was full of foreigners running the exact same dodge. That empty half of Japan exists mostly in threads like this, the second a town gets cheap and quiet everyone with a blog post finds it
