The Long Weekend Is Not A Reward, It Is A Confession That The Normal Week Is Broken

My company just announced a four day weekend and framed it like a gift. Four days off, because the other three hundred and sixty one are apparently fine and nobody is allowed to say otherwise out loud. Here is what a long weekend actually tells you. It tells you the normal week is not survivable without an escape hatch. Nobody needs a recovery day after a week that did not wreck them. I have been doing this for over a decade and the only thing that changed is that the escape hatches got quieter. We used to get pizza. Now we get a Friday and a Slack message about gratitude. I will take the day. I am not a hero. But I would trade every long weekend this year for one normal Tuesday where I close the laptop at five and nobody acts like I committed a crime.

Your three day mountain trip is not a vacation. It is a commute with a view.

Three days off. Two of them spent driving. The third spent photographing the scenery so I could prove to strangers that I was relaxed. I came home more tired than when I left and my inbox never noticed I was gone. If your time off needs an itinerary, a packing list and a sunrise alarm, it is a work trip with better lighting.
