Your rent did not go up because of greed, it went up because your city refuses to build
Everyone wants cheaper rent and nobody wants a building next to them. That is the entire debate, and it explains why it never ends. Supply is the boring answer and the only one that has ever worked. You cannot fix a shortage by being angry at the landlord. The landlord is just the guy standing between you and the actual problem, which is a city that made it illegal to build enough homes. Here is the uncomfortable question. Would you vote yes for a six story apartment on your street. If the answer is no, then you are the shortage. I say this as someone who would also flinch.4
