Crime Decline in Uttar Pradesh (2016–2025)
What checks out:
Every single 2016 and 2024 number on the crime graphic is pulled accurately from NCRB tables, and the percentage drops are mathematically exact:
Dacoity: Down 79.93% (284 → 57), giving UP the lowest dacoity rate in India.
Robbery: Down 74.17% (4,502 → 1,163; ranked 28th nationally).
Rioting: Down 67.45% (8,018 → 2,610; Hindustan Times).
Extortion: Down 51.74% (1,863 → 899).
Murder: Down 34.18% (4,889 → 3,218; rate of 1.3 per lakh vs. 1.9 national average, ranking 29th).
Rape (Sec. 376 / BNS): Down 33.37% (4,816 → 3,209; rate of 2.8 per lakh women vs. 4.3 nationally, ranking 24th).
Overall Crime Rate: UP's 2024 IPC/BNS crime rate is 180.2 per lakh, which is 28.5% lower than the national average of 252.3 (ranking 18th despite holding ~17.8% of India's population) (Hindustan Times).
The caveats the chart leaves out:
Total registered FIRs actually rose 52.5%: While violent and predatory crimes dropped sharply, total cognizable IPC/BNS cases rose from 2,82,171 (2016) to 4,30,552 (2024) (Hindustan Times), and total registered crimes against women rose from 49,262 to 66,398 (Ghatna Chakra). UP Police attribute higher aggregate registrations to digital e-FIR portals and Women Help Desks.
Parent + Child double counting: The graphic pads 12 categories into 18 rows by listing parent totals alongside their own sub-categories—e.g., Public Order Offences (2,774) is mostly Rioting (2,610), and Property Offences (62,475) is the sum of Theft (43,598) + Robbery (1,163) + Extortion (899) + Dacoity (57) + Burglary (IndiaStatistics Audit).
BNS Reclassification: The switch from IPC to Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) on July 1, 2024 reclassified "simple hurt" as non-cognizable, which NCRB notes affects year-on-year comparisons.
TL;DR: The drop in violent/organized crime (murder -34%, robbery -74%, dacoity -80%, rioting -67%) and the doubling of UP's nominal GSDP (₹13.3L cr → ₹30.25L cr), exports (₹0.84L cr → ₹1.86L cr), and registered factories (14.1k → 30.7k) are backed by official NCRB and Economic Survey records. Just keep in mind that total FIR registrations rose 52.5% via easier reporting, the crime chart double-counts parent/child categories, and UP's net per-capita income (₹1.10L), while doubled, still sits at roughly half the national average.
